JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

POSITION:                                 MENTOR TEACHER SYSTEMWIDE

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:      Director of Human Resources/Principal

 

FLSA/CONTRACT STATUS:     Extracurricular

 

EMPLOYMENT TERM:              School Year

 

SALARY:                                    $20 per hour on a schedule set in collaboration with the principal and the new teacher

 

EVALUATION:                            By immediate supervisor as needed 

 

JOB SUMMARY:                       Serves as a master teacher assigned to a group of new teachers to contact, observe, coach, and mentor on a regular basis.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assesses skills and needs of new teachers for the purpose of ensuring appropriate assistance and strategies for identified mentoring activities;
  • Builds relationships with new teachers for the purpose of establishing an environment of trust and collaboration;
  • Coaches and assists new teachers with teaching strategies, lesson planning, classroom management and identification of curriculum resources for the purpose of improving instruction and helping new teachers become successful;
  • Collaborates with academic coaches and technology integration specialists for the purpose of constructing exemplary lessons, identifying professional development needs, and planning and coordinating professional development opportunities;
  • Observes the beginning teacher in the classroom for at least one hour per week during the first half of the school year. Observation time may be reduced at the discretion of the mentor to one hour every two weeks during the second half of the school year.
  • Participates in weekly meetings with the new teacher to discuss the new teacher’s performance and any needed improvements. These meetings may be reduced to biweekly meetings during the second half of the school year;
  • Models professionalism at all times for the purpose of demonstrating expected behaviors and actions;
  • Serves as a member of the Professional Support team;
  • Completes documentation log of observations and meetings;
  • Informs Professional Development Chairperson of needed professional development sessions;
  • Models and teaches lessons for the purpose of demonstrating best practices in instruction, planning and classroom management; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by principal.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of leadership skills with ability to communicate and relate well to school staff and county administrators;
  • Have completed the four days of mentor training or willing to commit to attend the training;
  • Available to observe and meet with new teacher throughout the school week;
  • Knowledgeable of current educational trends and research;
  • Knowledge of school and county policies; and
  • Minimum of five years of successful full-time teaching experience in Mineral County Schools

The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
